ABOUT THIS WATCH

The Dark Matter is our most enigmatic dial to date—mysterious, quietly powerful, and shaped in the silence of deep space to meet the sharp architecture of full-ceramic watchmaking.

Some four ice ages ago, an iron meteorite called "Muonionalusta" entered Earth’s atmosphere and shattered across a remote region north of the Arctic Circle—an area frozen solid for most of the year and immersed in 24-hour darkness for months at a time. From this extraterrestrial alloy, we cut the dials for the Dark Matter. After slicing and etching the meteorite, a precise dark-nickel treatment sharpens the natural Widmanstätten pattern—those equilateral, interlocking triangles that form only when molten metal cools so slowly in space that crystals can grow undisturbed over eons. The result is a surface that shifts between deep graphite and bright metallic flashes depending on the light and angle. It’s a dial that never repeats itself, because nature never creates the same crystal twice.

Unlike typical stone dials that are glued onto brass plates, the Dark Matter’s dial is engineered as a single, solid meteorite component, with its dial feet soldered directly into the material. This allowed us to increase its thickness and precision-machine a fully carved, beveled 6-o’clock date window—a signature across Formex timepieces and a unique achievement in meteorite dial fabrication. The process demanded extensive prototyping in our dial manufacture in the Swiss Jura mountains.

Set against the jet-black, ultra-scratch-resistant ceramic case, the effect is surreal—almost gravitational. Gun-metal finished, hand-applied indices and hands appear to float above the meteorite’s crystalline terrain, their brushed facets and polished bevels catching the light like orbiting fragments. BGW9 Super-LumiNova® adds a restrained glow in the dark, while the tone-on-tone date window lets the meteorite surface speak without interruption. Even “Swiss Made” stays discreet on the rehaut, allowing the cosmos to take center stage.

The Dark Matter is not merely a dial; it’s a meeting point between interstellar history and contemporary engineering. A reminder that even in a disciplined, technical watch like the Essence Ceramica, there is room for something that feels quietly otherworldly.

Movement

Inside the Dark Matter beats an officially certified Soprod Newton P092, a bespoke automatic caliber co-developed to Formex specifications. Its distinctive 6/12-o’clock architecture places the balance at 6 beneath a transverse bridge for enhanced shock resistance—reinforced further by Incabloc’s double-cone protection system. The finishing is unmistakably modern: laser-textured grainé bridges with vertically brushed edges in a galvanic black-gold tone, thermally blued screws, and a skeletonized rotor featuring an open-worked Formex emblem with a sunburst finish. All of it is visible through the sapphire exhibition case back. Every Newton P092 undergoes Chronofiable® endurance testing, including accelerated aging cycles, humidity and temperature variations, and 20,000 shock impacts. After that, each movement is independently tested for precision and awarded COSC chronometer certification to ISO 3159. Every Dark Matter arrives with its individual COSC certificate and engraved chronometer number on the movement.

FEATURES

An Automatic, also called self-winding watch, is a mechanical watch in which the mainspring is wound automatically as a result of the natural motion of the wearer's arm, to provide energy to run the watch, making manual winding unnecessary. All our Automatic movements are manufactured in Switzerland.

A chronometer is a watch that has been tested and certified to meet the most strict precision and accuracy standards. “Chronometer” isn’t just a name that any watch brand can print on the dial of its watches. It is an official nomenclature, defined by precise rules, which lay down the definition of the term “chronometer”, describing the categories, the test programme and the acceptable minimum requirements for wrist chronometers. In Switzerland, the COSC, or Contrôle Officiel Suisse des Chronomètres, is the only official organisation allowed to certify chronometers.

Modeled with high-performance bikes and racing cars in mind, Formex’s patented Case Suspension System works by integrating four springs between the upper and lower watch case. The result is the ultimate shock absorption system designed to protect the watch movement and deliver unparalleled comfort to the wearer.
This watch features an ultra-strong and light-weight folding clasp, made of carbon fiber composite and a stainless steel or titanium buckle. The gradual fine adjustment system allows you to tighten or loosen the strap length when the wrist size varies due to temperature and activity.
All straps and bracelets can be interchanged by hand without the use of any tools and in a few mere seconds. This allows you to easily swap straps on the go and wear your personal style for any occasion.
A sapphire crystal or “glass” is a very hard, transparent material made of crystallizing pure aluminium oxide at extremely high temperatures. Sapphire is one of the hardest substances on earth. It measures 9 on the Mohs scale (diamond measures 10, the highest rating), which is a system for rating the relative hardness of various materials, making it virtually scratch proof.
Applying AR coating will limit the reflection on a sapphire or mineral glass to a very low level.
The transparent case back, made of sapphire crystal, makes it possible to see the movement inside the watch.
Water resistance measures how much water pressure a watch can handle before it breaks. This measurement is important to know for the proper care and keeping of your watch. Water resistance of 100 m / 330 ft means that it can be used for swimming, snorkeling, and similar activities.

MASTERING THE ENGINEERING OF CERAMIC

The Essence Ceramica COSC brings advanced ceramic expertise to the forefront with its sophisticated combination of vertical-brushed and diamond-polished finishes. Achieving such refined surface treatments in ceramic requires exceptional skill, specialized diamond tooling, and a profound understanding of the material. Thanks to its close connection with Dexel – a reference in the watchmaking industry and a leading expert in ceramic watch components, owned by the same family – Formex benefits from over 40 years of specialized expertise, pushing the boundaries of what’s possible with this advanced material. Each case and bracelet component undergoes multiple finishing stages, resulting in a dynamic interplay of light that brings the ceramic to life – and gives the watch striking wrist presence.

OFFICIALLY CERTIFIED MOVEMENT

In 2023, Formex began co-developing a bespoke Soprod Newton P092 automatic caliber to our specifications: a symmetrical 6–12 o’clock architecture with the balance at 6 beneath a transverse bridge for superior shock and vibration resistance—echoing our patented Case Suspension System—plus Incabloc’s benchmark double-cone shock absorber. Designed in-house for a modern aesthetic, the movement showcases laser-textured grainé bridges with vertically brushed edges and a galvanic black-gold treatment, traditional thermally blued screws, and a skeletonized rotor with an open-worked Formex emblem and bold sunburst finish—visible through the sapphire caseback. Each caliber is independently endurance-tested to Chronofiable® standards at Laboratoire Dubois (accelerated aging, temperature and humidity cycles, and 20,000 shocks) and then certified by the COSC under ISO 3159 over 15 days in five positions and three temperatures. Only movements averaging −4/+6 s/day pass; every watch ships with its COSC certificate and an individually engraved chronometer number.

WORLD'S FIRST MICRO-ADJUSTABLE CERAMIC CLASP

Extending the same level of precision engineering beyond the case, the Essence Ceramica COSC is fitted with a full-ceramic bracelet that mirrors the case’s meticulous finishing. Its brushed surfaces and diamond-polished bevels catch the light with every wrist movement, creating a dynamic interplay of reflections. A true breakthrough lies in the integration of Formex’s purpose-designed, patented micro-adjustable ceramic clasp—a world first—seamlessly incorporated into the ceramic bracelet. Unlike traditional metal clasps, which can be easily machined or even stamped, ceramic’s hardness makes such precision engineering extraordinarily challenging. Yet, Formex has not only succeeded in crafting a ceramic clasp that seamlessly matches the bracelet but has also integrated its patented micro-adjustment system. This groundbreaking mechanism, operating over a range of 5 mm in increments of 1.5mm, allows for fine-tuning the fit on the fly to expand or shorten the bracelet in both directions – for perfect comfort, while the watch is on the wrist, with the clasp closed, and without tools.

The Dark Matter’s dial

The Dark Matter’s dial begins as a fragment of the Muonionalusta iron meteorite, one of the oldest known materials on Earth, discovered north of the Arctic Circle in a region frozen and dark for much of the year. After precisely slicing and etching the meteorite, we apply a dark-nickel treatment that enhances the natural Widmanstätten pattern—those geometric crystal formations that emerge only when an iron-nickel core cools undisturbed in space over millions of years. Unlike typical stone or meteorite dials that rely on a thin slice glued onto a brass plate, the Dark Matter is engineered from a solid, thicker meteorite component. This allows us to solder the dial feet directly into the material, preserving structural integrity while keeping the dial visually pure and uncompromised. The result is a surface that shifts between deep graphite and bright metallic reflections depending on the light—a truly one-of-a-kind dial, as nature never creates the same crystalline pattern twice.
